Event Details

You are invited to join SOCHE for a virtual lunch and learn entitled “Take What You Need: Using Open Space to Build Student Engagement,” on Tuesday, May 14, beginning at 12 p.m. ET. The session will be presented by Amber McCurdy, remote teaching instructor at Central State University.

According to School Counselor Blog, the concept of a “Take What You Need” board is that you take a positive message that you “need” to hear, or you can “give” (write) a positive or uplifting message for someone else to take.

In this presentation, you will learn about using Take What You Need boards to teach about mental health, community, writing and diversity. These boards can be used to build student engagement across disciplines and space, or within the context of a class, and spanning different formats.

Discover how to use Take What You Need to produce student work that is reflective and builds self-reflection. See how these things can be built to create and enhance research projects from many disciplines.

After this session, attendees will be able to:

  • See new ways to engage students
  • Learn to build through student work
  • Learn to teach concepts at higher levels and in novel ways
  • Engage in deep critical and reflective thought about your teaching space and its limits…or lack of limits
  • Understand building qualitative, student-driven research questions into your curriculum
  • Gain insight into innovative ways to see real-world examples of your discipline and bring that to student work

Councils & Committees

SOCHE is dedicated to advancing higher education through active collaboration, resource and knowledge building, and effective professional development programs. To accomplish this, SOCHE administers 16 active Councils and Committees. The purpose of a SOCHE Council or Committee is to provide an opportunity for representatives from higher education to be a resource for one another, share information and best practices, identify common challenges, and, ultimately, broaden awareness of the resources, services, and activities in higher education. SOCHE is also dependent upon the Councils and Committees for substantial input on annual professional development programs.
