Event Details

The Strategic Ohio Council for Higher Education (SOCHE) invites you to join us for a virtual training, “When Tensions Rise: Practical Skills for De-Escalation,” on Thursday, Feb. 18, from 10-11:30 a.m. ET. The webinar will be presented by Geoffrey Woolf from Cincinnati State Technical and Community College.

Tense interactions can arise anywhere in higher education, from conversations with students to exchanges among colleagues. While many professionals already draw on skills and experiences that can help them navigate conflict, effectively applying those skills in the moment can be challenging.

This practical workshop will focus specifically on recognizing and responding to situations before or as they escalate. Participants will consider how existing knowledge and experience can be reframed to better understand tense interactions, recognize behaviors that contribute to escalation, and respond in ways that move conversations in a more productive direction. Woolf also will introduce new approaches and encourage participants to reflect on past interactions to identify strategies they can apply to future situations.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize common behaviors that can lead to conflict escalation.
  • Reframe unproductive behaviors to prevent escalation.
  • Analyze past conflicts with students and/or co-workers.
  • Identify steps they can take to make future conflict more productive.

Councils & Committees

SOCHE is dedicated to advancing higher education through active collaboration, resource and knowledge building, and effective professional development programs. To accomplish this, SOCHE administers 16 active Councils and Committees. The purpose of a SOCHE Council or Committee is to provide an opportunity for representatives from higher education to be a resource for one another, share information and best practices, identify common challenges, and, ultimately, broaden awareness of the resources, services, and activities in higher education. SOCHE is also dependent upon the Councils and Committees for substantial input on annual professional development programs.
