Event Details

Balancing empathy with accountability is one of the defining challenges of effective leadership. Team members need support, understanding, and flexibility — but they also need clear expectations, constructive feedback, and accountability to achieve shared goals. The strongest leaders know these aren’t competing priorities; they are complementary skills that create healthier, higher-performing teams.

Join SOCHE for a virtual lunch and learn, “The Balancing Act: Managing Empathy and Accountability on Your Team,” on Friday, Jan. 22, from 12-1 p.m. ET via Zoom. This session will be presented by Zoe Nunley of Xavier University.

During this interactive session, participants will explore how to integrate empathy and accountability into their leadership approach, rather than treating them as opposing forces. Through discussion, self-reflection, and practical workplace scenarios, attendees will examine their own leadership tendencies, learn strategies for setting clear expectations and delivering forward-focused feedback, and discover how a human-centered approach can strengthen both relationships and results.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Define and differentiate empathy and accountability within a leadership context.
  • Identify their own leadership tendencies along the empathy-accountability continuum.
  • Apply strategies to set clear expectations and provide effective, forward-focused feedback.
  • Use a human-centered approach to maintain accountability while supporting individual team needs.
  • Respond to real-world team challenges using a balanced, practical framework.

Strong leadership requires more than good intentions — it requires practical skills that inspire trust while driving results. Reserve your spot today and leave with proven strategies you can use immediately to strengthen your leadership and help your team thrive.

Councils & Committees

SOCHE is dedicated to advancing higher education through active collaboration, resource and knowledge building, and effective professional development programs. To accomplish this, SOCHE administers 16 active Councils and Committees. The purpose of a SOCHE Council or Committee is to provide an opportunity for representatives from higher education to be a resource for one another, share information and best practices, identify common challenges, and, ultimately, broaden awareness of the resources, services, and activities in higher education. SOCHE is also dependent upon the Councils and Committees for substantial input on annual professional development programs.
