Event Details

The second session in the 2023 SOCHE Leadership Development series will be a virtual lunch and learn entitled “Developing Leadership Skills for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Higher Education.” The session, which will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 8, from 12-1 p.m. ET via Zoom, will be presented by Dr. Rita Kumar, Executive Director of the Faculty Enrichment Center at the University of Cincinnati and Dr. Brenda Refaei, Co-director of the Learning & Teaching Center at UC.

The pandemic and furor over social justice are challenging how educators approach their work. Debates over the role of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in higher education have left many educators feeling burned out and confused.

In this leadership session, the facilitators will work with participants to develop a deeper understanding of their DEI values through self-awareness exercises. Participants will be introduced to the DEI taxonomy in order to understand how they can map their path to emerge as leaders in DEI.  With this understanding, participants will be invited to explore strategies that will allow them to advance their DEI goals in their work. Participants will leave the session with an action plan to guide their work in creating more equitable and inclusive workspaces.

Webinar participants will:

  • Learn techniques to develop self-awareness of their DEI values.
  • Learn strategies to advance their DEI goals.

Participants in the 2023 SOCHE Leadership Development Program are automatically registered for this event.

Join us to learn how advancing your DEI goals also will make you a better leader.

Councils & Committees

SOCHE is dedicated to advancing higher education through active collaboration, resource and knowledge building, and effective professional development programs. To accomplish this, SOCHE administers 16 active Councils and Committees. The purpose of a SOCHE Council or Committee is to provide an opportunity for representatives from higher education to be a resource for one another, share information and best practices, identify common challenges, and, ultimately, broaden awareness of the resources, services, and activities in higher education. SOCHE is also dependent upon the Councils and Committees for substantial input on annual professional development programs.
