Event Details

You are invited to join SOCHE for a virtual lunch and learn entitled “From Surviving to Thriving: How to Navigate Awkward Conversations,” on Tuesday, Feb. 10, beginning at 12 p.m. ET. The session will be presented by Dr. Derek Petrey, chair of the Department of Humanities, Government and Modern Languages at Sinclair Community College.

During this session, we will discuss how conversations get awkward, how to understand the underlying factors of a conversation, and how different types of people approach conversations differently. We will then learn and practice de-escalation and focusing techniques to move conversations from things to dread and survive to meaningful dialogue. We also will also share resources for continuing your development of conversational techniques in the classroom and beyond.

Session attendees will learn:

  • Active listening techniques and how to use strong questions to navigate conversations.
  • How generational attitudes toward conversation affect participation in dialogue and active learning.
  • How to access and use multiple resources for conversation in their personal, professional, and educational life.

Whether you’re an educator, administrator, or professional looking to strengthen your communication skills, this session will leave you feeling more confident, capable, and conversation-ready. Registration for this event will close on Sunday, Feb. 8. Click here to register now.

Councils & Committees

SOCHE is dedicated to advancing higher education through active collaboration, resource and knowledge building, and effective professional development programs. To accomplish this, SOCHE administers 16 active Councils and Committees. The purpose of a SOCHE Council or Committee is to provide an opportunity for representatives from higher education to be a resource for one another, share information and best practices, identify common challenges, and, ultimately, broaden awareness of the resources, services, and activities in higher education. SOCHE is also dependent upon the Councils and Committees for substantial input on annual professional development programs.
