Event Details

You are invited to join SOCHE for a virtual lunch and learn entitled “Matters of the Heart:  Connections and Relationships,” on Wednesday, March 11, beginning at 12 p.m. ET. The session will be presented by Dr. Dawayne Kirkman, Senior Vice President of Student Affairs at Clark State College.

In Relationship Rich Education, authors Peter Felten and Leo Lambert share this: “Relationships are the beating heart of the undergraduate experience.” Students begin to thrive when they feel welcomed at a university — they have a sense of belonging to the institution and feel connected within the school.

After working in higher education for 25 plus years, Dr. Kirkman has developed a mantra: “Love yourself, love others, and make meaningful connections and relationships!” It has been his desire to lead with that sentiment when interacting with students and fellow employees.

He believes that love cures both those who give it and those who receive it. In this session, we will briefly explore the four types of love (storge, philia, eros, and agape), hear a personal story about forgiveness, and discuss the importance of connection and relationships. We also will cover the Art of Self-Love and Giving Love with a Support Network exercise.

Those attending this session will learn to:

  • Gain a better understanding of “relationship-rich education”
  • Build an even stronger Student Affairs team
  • Have fun—learning can be engaging and interactive

Whether you’re looking to strengthen your student engagement efforts or foster deeper connections within your team, this session offers practical insights and heartfelt inspiration. Click here now to register for an investment in relationships…and in yourself.

About the Presenter

Dawayne Kirkman, Ph.D.
Senior Vice President, Student Affairs, Enrollment Management & Regional Locations
Clark State College

I was the first male in my family to graduate from high school and the first person in my family to go to college and graduate with a four-year degree from Berea College. After completing that degree at Berea College, I went on to complete my Masters at Wright State University, and then my Doctorate in Educational Leadership at the University of Dayton. I have worked in higher education at two community colleges for the past 23 years—proudly helping others achieve their academic goals. I have had the privilege of working in Admissions, coordinating Academic Resource Centers, managing and directing two new Regional Locations, and being the Dean of Students. For the past four years, I have served on Clark State College’s Executive Council and am now the Senior Vice President of Student Affairs, Enrollment Management, and Regional Locations. I also co-chair our work with Achieving the Dream, Complete College America, and One Million Degrees alongside our Provost and lead other major college initiatives that impact faculty, staff, and students. I foster a culture of “Right To Succeed” versus “Right To Fail”.

Councils & Committees

SOCHE is dedicated to advancing higher education through active collaboration, resource and knowledge building, and effective professional development programs. To accomplish this, SOCHE administers 16 active Councils and Committees. The purpose of a SOCHE Council or Committee is to provide an opportunity for representatives from higher education to be a resource for one another, share information and best practices, identify common challenges, and, ultimately, broaden awareness of the resources, services, and activities in higher education. SOCHE is also dependent upon the Councils and Committees for substantial input on annual professional development programs.
