Event Details

The Strategic Ohio Council for Higher Education (SOCHE) is pleased to announce a new in-person workshop, “Exploring the Future of Centers for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education,” which will be held on Friday, June 7, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine Medical Education Building 2 (6785 Bobcat Way) in Dublin.

Created and hosted by faculty development experts, “Exploring the Future of Centers for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education” focuses on the critical mission of establishing and sustaining centers of teaching and learning (CTLs) to nurture innovation and meet the ever-evolving needs of higher education. CTLs serve as catalysts for transformative pedagogy, provide faculty development, and support instructional quality.

This day-long workshop brings together faculty, administrators, and staff supporting centers for teaching and learning and those hoping to develop them to consider frameworks and models for the future. All participants will spend the morning together, exploring the landscape of CTLs nationally and in the state of Ohio, considering how to develop or sustain the work of CTLs amidst challenging budgetary and policy landscapes, and sharing approaches to leveraging and collaborating with faculty and academic leaders to design and deliver a portfolio of development offerings. The afternoon will be dedicated to breakout sessions focused on two key tracks: “New and Developing Centers for Teaching and Learning (CTL)” and “Sustaining and Evolving Centers for Teaching and Learning (CTL).”

Track 1: New and Developing Centers for Teaching and Learning (CTL)
This track will provide invaluable insights into the initial phases of creating a CTL, which include creating a mission statement, vision planning, resource allocation, and stakeholder engagement. Participants will also explore how to implement and assess faculty development.

Track 2: Sustaining and Evolving Centers for Teaching and Learning (CTL)
This track will address strategies for maintaining and evolving established centers. Key topics include redefining and amplifying the role of inclusive pedagogy, embracing the transformative power of educational technology, and the role of CTLs related to scholarship of teaching and learning. Participants will also explore how centers might facilitate interdisciplinary teaching and support a culture of continuous adapation and innovation.

To assist in determining meeting space accommodations, registrants will need to choose a specific track during the registration process. Click here to register now.

Councils & Committees

SOCHE is dedicated to advancing higher education through active collaboration, resource and knowledge building, and effective professional development programs. To accomplish this, SOCHE administers 16 active Councils and Committees. The purpose of a SOCHE Council or Committee is to provide an opportunity for representatives from higher education to be a resource for one another, share information and best practices, identify common challenges, and, ultimately, broaden awareness of the resources, services, and activities in higher education. SOCHE is also dependent upon the Councils and Committees for substantial input on annual professional development programs.
