The Strategic Ohio Council for Higher Education (SOCHE) and Ohio Veterans Education Council (OVEC) are pleased to announce the 2023 SOCHE-OVEC Veterans Workshop, an in-person event that will be held on Friday, Oct. 6, from 9:15 a.m.-3 p.m. ET.
For the convenience of members traveling from all over Ohio, the workshop will be held in Columbus at COhatch Polaris’ Meridian Event Center (1554 Polaris Parkway, Suite 325, Columbus). This year’s theme is “Serving Those Who Served: Ensuring Academic Success for Military-Connected Students.”
We have planned a full day of programming that is geared specifically for personnel who provide support to student veterans and other military-connected students at higher education institutions throughout the state of Ohio. The day will begin with a moving keynote session on resilience from military mental health expert William Wall. Then you’ll have the chance to attend sessions on helping students navigate accessibility and disability services on campus; facilitating student veteran transition into the workforce; best practices around assessments; and assisting with the processing of Military Transfer Assurance Guides on campus. We’ll wrap up the day with a panel of student veterans who will share the best ways to engage their peers on campus.

| 9:30 a.m. | KEYNOTE – Complexities & Challenges: Key Considerations Toward Enhancing Veteran Student Success William Wall, LCSW, Military Mental Health Expert Student veterans face a host of complexities in the higher education environment. These complexities are often shared with other students who have been exposed to adverse childhood events. The challenges our student veterans face are unique and include not only mental health conditions but also comorbid health issues that can put their academic success at risk. In this session, five key considerations will be addressed that, when implemented, can provide an academic environment in which student veterans can thrive. |

We’ll also cover how to temper expectations about what accommodations can and cannot be provided. You’ll discover how to help faculty and the campus transfer credit personnel understand awarding credit when not every class, job, or MOS has an MTAG associated with it. Additionally, learn what additional information can be provided so schools will award credit.
