Managing Conflict with Confidence

The Strategic Ohio Council for Higher Education (SOCHE) invites you to an interactive, in-person professional development training, “Managing Conflict with Confidence,” on Friday, April 24, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. ET, at the Montgomery County Business Solutions Center (1435 Cincinnati Street, Suite 300, Dayton). This session will be facilitated by trainers from Sinclair Workforce Development.

Conflict is a natural part of any workplace, particularly in higher education environments where collaboration, shared governance, diverse perspectives, and competing priorities are part of daily operations. From navigating difficult conversations with colleagues, to addressing concerns raised by students, or balancing cross-departmental expectations, higher education personnel frequently encounter situations where effective conflict management is essential.

This interactive training will equip participants with practical tools to better understand the dynamics of conflict and respond with confidence, professionalism, and intention. Attendees will identify their primary approach to handling conflict, explore when and why different conflict-resolution strategies are most effective, and practice techniques for turning challenging interactions into productive conversations. Through guided discussion and hands-on activities, participants will gain skills they can immediately apply in a variety of campus and workplace settings.

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

• Identify underlying sources and common causes of workplace conflict
• Describe five different approaches for responding to conflict situations
• Discuss the circumstances, implications, and benefits of using each conflict mode
• Practice navigating difficult conversations and reframing conflict into constructive dialogue
