For the 2025-2026 school year, SOCHE will host a special Career Development Series of virtual presentations that is designed to support higher education personnel as they help develop the Workforce of Tomorrow.
The third session of the SOCHE Career Development Series will be “Helping Academically Underperforming Students Land Great Jobs: Strategy for Success,” hosted on Wednesday, Feb. 18, from 12-1 p.m. ET via Zoom. Dr. Beth Hanson and Christine Tonnis, from the University of Cincinnati College of Cooperative Education and Professional Studies, will be presenting.
Do your academically underperforming students lack confidence in finding a co-op job? Join us to learn how to best support students with lower GPAs in finding their first co-op job and setting themselves up for future success.
Our investigation of the topic, with input from employer partners, resulted in identifying best practices for supporting underperforming students in their search for their first co-op job. Support strategies may be transferable to the new graduate job search, as well. Results were surprising, but the remedy is achievable!
Attendees of this session will be able to…
- Understand what makes students successful in the job search.
- Identify strategies to guide students with low grade point averages in connecting with potential employers
- Practice role play using appreciative advising language to help create a welcoming environment and build student confidence
- Begin to evaluate their own practice to see where they might use these findings and techniques to help similar student populations

About the Presenters

Beth Hanson, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor, Chemical Engineering Co-op and Environmental Engineering Co-op
University of Cincinnati
Dr. Beth Hanson not only advises chemical and environmental engineering students at UC, but she is also a former University of Cincinnati chemical engineering student herself. She used co-op to guide her towards graduate studies in chemistry, earning her PhD from the University of Akron. She served the Food & Drug Administration’s National Forensic Chemistry Center as an analytical and forensic chemist for over seven years. Her passion for teaching and helping others led her back to the University of Cincinnati in 2017.

Christine Tonnis
Associate Professor, Co-op Adviser for Cybersecurity Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering Technology
University of Cincinnati
Christine Tonnis, Associate Professor, teaches and advises electrical engineering and cybersecurity engineering co-ops at the University of Cincinnati (UC). Chris is a proud UC alumnus from UC’s Ohio College of Applied Science with a BS in Mechanical Engineering Technology, and a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from UC’s College of Education, Criminal Justice, Human Services. Chris credits her own co-op experience with leading her to a career working with engineering co-ops.
