2025-2026 SOCHE EXCELLENCE AWARDS

The Strategic Ohio Council for Higher Education (SOCHE) recognizes the importance of acknowledging the outstanding faculty and staff at our member institutions. Each school selected one (1) Faculty Excellence Award winner based on their institution’s criteria, with special consideration of demonstrated excellence in teaching, service, and/or scholarship. Similarly, the schools each chose one (1) Staff Excellence Award winner based on their institution’s criteria, with special consideration of demonstrated excellence in student success, service, and/or assessment. Finally, each college or university selected a winner for the Campus Impact Award, which is based on institutional selection criteria, with special consideration for performance that made a positive impact on the school or campus, as a whole. This category is open to faculty, staff, or administrators.

Jennifer Blanchard
Staff Excellence Award

Program Manager, Medical Residency and Fellowship Programs
Air Force Institute of Technology

 

Program manager for the Medical Residency and Fellowship Programs at Air Force Institute of Technology, Jennifer Blanchard is the school’s Staff Excellence Award winner this year. Jennifer demonstrated extraordinary leadership, managing a $300K travel budget with a 99% obligation rate while guiding 105 health education students. She eliminated a 15% in-processing backlog and absorbed three analysts’ duties during furlough, ensuring uninterrupted support for 350 students. Reconciling $2.3M in Medical Special Pay contracts within 12 hours, she thwarted delays and enhanced Medical Corps retention. Her superior performance earned the 2025 4th Quarter Civilian Cat-II award.

Faculty Excellence Award

Assistant Professor of Operations Research
Air Force Institute of Technology

 

As Assistant Professor of Operations Research, Dr. William N. Caballero is the Air Force Institute of Technology Faculty Excellence Award winner. Dr. Caballero exemplifies the ideal scholar, educator, and leader. He is co-primary investigator on a 5-year/$1.6M grant, AFIT representative for DARPA’s SABER program, and published five Q1-level articles during this award period. A dedicated mentor, he overhauled three graduate courses while advising five students (4 MS/1 PhD). His commitment extends to service as MORS journal associate editor, Secretary/Treasurer for INFORMS MAS, and he has initiated partnerships with NATO, NRO, and other key national security organizations.

Campus Impact Award

Supervisory Education Specialist
Air Force Institute of Technology

 

Damon Z. Smith, Supervisory Education Specialist, is AFIT’s 2026 Campus Impact Award winner after he revolutionized AFIT/CI and A6, executing a comprehensive modernization of decade-old websites, enriching the digital experience for 4,000+ students. As Operations Officer, he deftly managed a $107.3M portfolio with the highest obligation rate, while directing a team supporting 2,200 students daily. His visionary leadership optimized IT infrastructure, streamlined resources, and amplified institutional effectiveness, culminating in selection for the prestigious AETC 71st Annual DoD Distinguished Civilian Service Award and COMAETC coining.

His effective support ensures we can complete our critical tasks, from GAL updates to submitting MILCON packages. Monique Cooper
Staff Excellence Award

Associate Director of Operations, Academic and Student Affairs
Antioch College

 

This year’s Staff Excellence Award winner for Antioch College, Associate Director of Operations for Academic and Student Affairs Monique Cooper’s skillful ability to analyze problems and strategically develop sustainable solutions is essential to the institution. Her organizational skills and strong work ethic have had a significant impact across departments. Monique has played a key role in streamlining Academic and Student Operations, leading the transition from paper-based processes to efficient electronic systems built within Google Workspace. A colleague said, “Monique has quickly become the ‘glue’ helping keep this beloved place together. Heck, she built a temporary student information system from scratch using only Google sheets! She is the epitome of an unsung hero.”

Jacqueline Gaines
Faculty Excellence Award

Assistant Professor, Cooperative Education
Antioch College

 

Antioch College’s Faculty Excellence Award winner, Assistant Professor of Cooperative Education Jacqueline Gaines has brought excellence to the school through her co-op work, in particular helping law-minded students gain access to pre-law networks and co-ops. In addition to being an excellent new hire, she is well known for the positivity and kindness that she brings to campus. According to a coworker: “Jacqueline has quietly but quickly found ways to directly improve the student experience, from stepping into the pre-law advisor role to updating ANTC 145 in the context of Endeavor wellness values. Jacqueline both fits in instantly and ups our game.”

Campus Impact Award

Director of Annual Giving | Department of Advancement

Meg Miller, Director of Annual Giving, is Antioch College’s 2026 Campus Impact Award winner. Meg is considered true fundraising powerhouse for the institution — consistently raising more than $1.5M annually through the annual giving program — while also being one of the most collaborative and generous teammates her colleagues have had the chance to work with. One of her coworkers stated, “In my own experience leading annual giving work, I know just how many moving pieces are involved — how strategy, data, stewardship, and storytelling all have to come together at once. What really sets great annual giving leaders apart is the ability to tell compelling stories, while still keeping a close eye on all the details that support the engagement pyramid.”

Dr. Luke T. Fredette, Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering in the School of Engineering and Computer Science at Cedarville University, is the 2026 Faculty Excellence Award winner. Dr. Fredette is innovative in his class delivery, always striving to relate complex information in a way that students comprehend and embrace. He has utilized his skills in rapid prototyping to revolutionize Cedarville’s truss competition into a more precise and predictable exercise, improving student learning and reducing frustration. His work to help a blind engineering student comprehend and conceptualize engineering concepts, which are normally highly reliant on graphical presentation methods, has been truly exceptional.

This year’s Staff Excellence Award winner for Cedarville University, Cheryl Shupe is executive assistant to the Vice President for Business and CFO. Her colleagues say Cheryl embodies Christ-centered service in all she does. Her love for God overflows into a genuine, daily commitment to care for others, consistently investing in the success and well-being of Cedarville students and colleagues. She brings contagious joy to her work, creating an environment marked by encouragement, kindness, and purpose. Cheryl doesn’t simply fulfill a role — she reflects the heart of Christ in the way she serves.

Dr. Patrick Anderson
Faculty Excellence Award

Associate Professor of Philosophy | Department of Humanities
Central State University

 

Associate Professor of Philosophy Dr. Patrick Anderson has been selected as Central State University’s Faculty Excellence Award winner for this year. Dr. Anderson published his second book, Anticolonialism, Ontology, and Semiotics, and was awarded an HBCU Faculty Grant from the American Council of Learned Societies. In the classroom, Dr. Anderson engaged students using innovative pedagogy that mixes digital teaching tools with old-fashioned handwritten notes. Dr. Anderson actively serves the university and the profession, including through his active role as a member of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics.

Charlene Edwards
Staff Excellence Award

Charlene Edwards, administrative coordinator for the Department of Agricultural and Life Sciences, is Central State University’s 2026 Staff Excellence Award. Charlene goes beyond administrative duties to mentor and advocate for students, helping many persist through academic and personal challenges. Her guidance, compassion, and proactive advising have strengthened recruitment and retention across STEM programs. Through extensive committee service and exceptional organizational skills, Charlene has made a lasting, transformative impact on students, faculty, and the university community.

Campus Impact Award

Associate Professor of Animal Science | Department of Agricultural and Life Sciences

Associate Professor of Animal Science at Central State University, Dr. Susan Speight was selected for this year’s Campus Impact Award because she demonstrates exceptional campus impact through excellence in teaching, mentoring, leadership, and service. She advises biology and sustainable agriculture students, has supervised many in-class honors projects, and contributed to program review for accreditation. As primary advisor of the revitalized MANRRS CSU chapter, she secured conference travel grants for students and was a finalist for the 2026 MANRRS National Advisor of the Year. Her service advances student success and inclusive excellence.

Clark State College has awarded Director of Facilities, Operations, and Maintenance Dan Ayars with this year’s Staff Excellence Award. Dan demonstrates exceptional leadership in maintaining and enhancing Clark State’s campus environment. He ensures the seamless daily operation of facilities while expertly managing complex capital and construction projects in collaboration with various stakeholders. His commitment to quality, efficiency, and long-term planning directly supports student success and institutional growth.

Robin Littell
Campus Impact Award

Project Director, Aspire
Clark State College

 

As Project Director for Aspire, Robin Littell is Clark State College’s 2026 Campus Impact Award winner. Colleagues say that Robin is like living water — wherever she is, there will be life and growth in abundance. As the Director of Clark State’s Aspire program she ensures that Aspire is a place of welcome and support for all students, but especially for first-generation students and individuals from immigrant households. Robin brought that into focus during a turbulent time in Springfield, rapidly expanding services to meet the needs of these students and creating a warm community for them. In times of heightened public attention, Robin became known for her efforts to build trust, reduce barriers to access, and support student engagement.

Emily Samples
Faculty Excellence Award

Assistant Professor, Nursing

Clark State has named Assistant Professor of Nursing Emily Samples as the school’s Faculty Excellence Award winner for 2026. Emily demonstrates a strong student-centered approach to teaching, particularly in supporting students during their final semester. She provides consistent leadership and guidance as students transition to professional practice, with a clear focus on readiness, confidence, and successful program completion. She employs effective and innovative teaching strategies, including case-based learning, structured clinical reflection, and targeted NCLEX preparation to support diverse learning styles. Through collaboration with other faculty, clinical partners, and student support services, Emily is deeply committed to preparing students as they transition to professional nursing practice.

As a co‑developer of the 2025 Edison State Alumni Achievement Awards, she helped create a meaningful platform to celebrate student success and institutional legacy. Her professionalism, collaborative approach, and positive presence make her a trusted leader and role model.

Janna Cressman
Faculty Excellence Award

God’s Bible School and College

 

Janna Cressman, Assistant Professor in the Division of Professional Studies at God’s Bible School and College, is the school’s Faculty Excellence Award winner for this year. Unlike other full-time faculty, Janna does not live in Cincinnati. She and her family reside in Spain, where they’re involved in ministry, so she teaches classes from a quarter of the way around the world! And she does not teach only asynchronous online courses, but also uses technology to teach live classes with GBS campus students.

Janna’s contribution goes beyond her significant commitment to teach from Spain. She provides leadership for GBS online education majors, working with them individually to help with appropriate placements in their states and supporting them throughout the rigorous licensure degree process.

As Director of Student Success for Kettering College, Rebecca Ingle was selected as Staff Excellence Award winner for 2026. Colleagues say Rebecca is the kind of person that makes an impact on anything she touches, and her newest role at KC as the coaching director shows this. She enters any job and space with her full energy, care, and attention. Her improvements in the coaching center were immediately felt by making it a warm and welcoming space, initiating collaborative practices with other departments, telling student tutors stories, and just creating a truly helpful space. Rebecca is kind to everyone she works with and seeks process improvements that are always student-centered.

Dr. Paula Reams
Campus Impact Award

Dean of Nursing
Kettering College

 

Dr. Paula Reams, Dean of Nursing at Kettering College, has been selected as the institution’s Campus Impact Award winner for 2026. During her long association with Kettering College, Dr. Reams has filled a wide variety of roles and accepted every challenge handed to her. She has served as chair of both the Health Sciences and Nursing departments and took on the role of Dean of Nursing, which includes wide-ranging responsibilities. She was instrumental in creating Kettering College’s Community Health Worker program and in overseeing the school’s ongoing student mental health initiative. Her willingness to take on any tasks presented to her and successfully completing them, while still pursuing her own education, is amazing.

Chosen as Kettering College’s Faculty Excellence Award winner, Tim Scanlon is Department Chair and Associate Professor in the school’s Master of Physician Assistant Studies program. Tim exemplifies thoughtful leadership and genuine care for both students and colleagues. As Department Chair, he brings deep clinical knowledge and real-world experience into the classroom, helping students learn how to think and apply their knowledge in meaningful clinical situations. Tim leads with humility and compassion, consistently communicating with students in ways that support their growth not only as future clinicians but as whole people. As Associate Professor of Speech Pathology and Audiology, Dr. Franklin demonstrates excellence through innovative, student-centered instruction that fosters intellectual curiosity and real-world application. The SOCHE Campus Impact Award winner for Miami University Regionals this year, Professor of English Dr. Marianne Cotugno also was honored by Miami Regionals with the Faculty Achievement in Service Award. She is recognized for sustained commitment to student success, institutional growth, and community engagement. Her leadership in strategic planning, curriculum innovation, and transfer pathways has strengthened the campus. She brings forward-looking vision by integrating emerging topics like generative AI and advancing writing across disciplines, while extending her impact through adult literacy, environmental education, and public programming.

The Miami University Regionals 2026 SOCHE Staff Excellence Award winner is Kelly McDaniel-Hayes, Administrative Assistant in the Office of the Vice President and Dean and External Relations and Communications. She also was the winner of the 2025–26 Miami University Regionals Campus Impact Award. Kelly is recognized for her professionalism, warmth, and dedication to creating outstanding experiences for all who enter the Dean’s office. She consistently goes above and beyond to make every guest feel welcomed and valued. Her expertise in coordinating high-profile visits, ceremonies, and campus events is evident in her attention to detail and grace under pressure. Her positivity helps keep stress low in a high-demand environment.

Dr. Nunes is recognized for his student-centered approach that fosters meaningful, transferable learning and builds confident writers, readers, and thinkers. His work exemplifies leadership in curriculum innovation and experiential learning that connect coursework to real-world impact.

Selected to receive the 2026 SOCHE Faculty Excellence Award for Mount St. Joseph University, Associate Professor of Graphic Design also was winner of the MSJ Teacher of the Year honor, the Clifford Award. In her nomination letter, Swati’s chair, Dr. Michaelann Kelley, highlighted Swati’s embodiment of the Mount’s mission “through her student-centered approach, fostering critical thinking, ethical leadership, service, and social responsibility.” Swati created and leads the Design Hub, an on-campus experiential learning environment through which students experience real-world projects for community partners and even international clients. Swati holds her students to high standards, and they respond positively, both in the classroom and beyond.

Jordan Murrey, Assistant Professor and Academic Program Director in Plastics Engineering Technology at Shawnee State University, has been chosen as the school’s Faculty Excellence Award winner this year. Jordan joined the plastics engineering faculty at SSU in the summer of 2025, taking over the role of program director and serving as the sole faculty member in the program for the last year, because of retirements and other organizational changes. In addition to taking on an extraordinary course load, he has re-established the student chapter of the Society of Plastics Engineers, organized field trips to local manufacturers and closely mentored students in the program. He has also revitalized curriculum in the program to align with current practices and led outreach efforts to bring more students into the program.

Jordan demonstrates teaching excellence through a hands-on, student-centered approach that bridges theory and real-world application. Rather than separating theory from practice, Jordan frequently conducts lectures directly in the lab, allowing students to immediately observe and apply complex plastics engineering concepts. This approach helps students better understand material behavior, manufacturing processes, and equipment operation in real time. By seeing concepts demonstrated as they are taught, students gain a deeper and more lasting comprehension than through traditional lecture methods alone.

In that time, she has contributed significantly to the development of vital campus-community relationships such as SSU’s partnership with Adena Health, designed to expand access to healthcare education and opportunities for students. As her nominator wrote: “She puts the needs of students, faculty, staff, and partners before her own, often working long hours behind the scenes to make sure projects move forward successfully. Kelly Brown, Assistant Professor in the Mental Health and Addiction Services Department at Sinclair Community College, has been chosen as the school’s Faculty Excellence Award winner this year. Kelly is the Mental Health and Addiction Services department’s lead in curriculum development. She is often the first faculty member to adopt new technology and has collaborated closely with eLearn staff in a variety of ways, including using Artificial Intelligence, innovative and experiential learning techniques and open educational resources. She works tirelessly to be sure all content is up-to-date and aligned with evidence-based practices in the behavioral health field. Kelly has a passion for supporting the Prison Education Program (PEP). She serves as the program coordinator for courses and as the department’s PEP coordinator, and she also assists in hiring and mentoring all PEP adjunct faculty.

Kelly frequently meets with students to ensure that they are getting the support they need outside of the classroom to successfully complete coursework and learn skills and concepts. Kelly’s student-centered approach includes connecting students with counseling services, accessibility services, and community resources. Kelly also has a passion for working closely with the prison education program (PEP), ensuring that students are getting their needs met when learning while incarcerated. She mentors the Prison Education Program (PEP) instructors to ensure that the students are getting the resources they need to successfully complete their educational goals while being incarcerated.

She has authored four books: Performing Organizational Paradoxes; Discursive Leadership; The Power of Framing; and The Art of Framing, plus co-editor of The Routledge Handbook of Organizational Leadership Communication. Dr. Fairhurst has published over 100 scholarly works and received numerous honors, including Fellow of the International Communication Association, Fulbright Scholar, and the 2026 University of Cincinnati Faculty Career Award.

Associate Professor of Biological and Environmental Sciences for Wittenberg University, Dr. Richard Phillips has been selected as the school’s 2026 Faculty Excellence Award winner. Dr. Phillips is a wildlife ecologist with a particular interest in dispersal of organisms across landscapes. He holds a B.A. in Biology from Emory University and a M.S. and Ph.D. from Texas Tech University in Wildlife Science. He has conducted research on wild turkeys, Mexican wolves, and montane rattlesnakes. Since his arrival at Wittenberg, he and his students have studied birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians.

One of his former students noted: “One of the most remarkable aspects of Dr. Phillips’ teaching is his commitment to experiential learning. Each year, he leads students on a winter weekend field study in Michigan
and a spring weekend field study in Mississippi. Students gain practical experience in the field while also forming lasting memories and friendships. It is clear these experiences leave a lasting impression and deepen students’ understanding of and love for wildlife and ecology.”

Dr. Karen Lahm, Professor of Sociology and Director, Crime and Justice Studies program, is Wright State University’s 2026 Faculty Excellence Award winner. As director of WSU’s Crime and Justice Studies program since 2015, Dr. Lahm supervises CJS internships and works with the community to provide experiential learning opportunities for students in the program. She developed an online pathway for CJS, coordinating with the WSU Lake Campus Police Academy and other agencies. She also has worked to develop prior learning assessment credit for students who earned the OPOTA (Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy) certification. Dr. Lahm publishes widely on topics related to gender and crime, misconduct in prison, and victimization. A role model for students, she also serves as faculty advisor to the Alpha Phi Sigma Criminal Justice Honor Society.

Wright State University’s 2026 Campus Impact Award winner is Dr. Patrick Sonner, Director of First-Year Experiences and Lecturer in Biomedical Sciences. As FYS director, Dr. Sonner facilitates first-year seminars campus-wide, meeting monthly with FYS instructors, organizing assessment, and garnering student feedback, successfully contributing to WSU’s first-year retention initiative. He has launched a new second-year student retention project to begin Fall 2026. As Lecturer in Biomedical Sciences, he directed WSU’s undergraduate Neuroscience Program and developed a combined BS/MS degree program in Physiology and Neuroscience. A quietly effective leader for over a decade, he has co-chaired the University-wide Retention Coordinating Committee, served on multiple University committees, and co-represents WSU for Ohio Strong Start in Science.

SOCHE is dedicated to advancing higher education through active collaboration, resource and knowledge building, and effective professional development programs. To accomplish this, SOCHE administers 16 active Councils and Committees. The purpose of a SOCHE Council or Committee is to provide an opportunity for representatives from higher education to be a resource for one another, share information and best practices, identify common challenges, and, ultimately, broaden awareness of the resources, services, and activities in higher education. SOCHE is also dependent upon the Councils and Committees for substantial input on annual professional development programs.
