The Strategic Ohio Council for Higher Education (SOCHE) recognizes the importance of acknowledging the outstanding faculty and staff at our member institutions. Each school selected one (1) Faculty Excellence Award winner based on their institution’s criteria, with special consideration of demonstrated excellence in teaching, service, and/or scholarship. Similarly, the schools each chose one (1) Staff Excellence Award winner based on their institution’s criteria, with special consideration of demonstrated excellence in student success, service, and/or assessment. Finally, each college or university selected a winner for the Campus Impact Award, which is based on institutional selection criteria, with special consideration for performance that made a positive impact on the school or campus, as a whole. This category is open to faculty, staff, or administrators.

Electronics Technician, AFIT Graduate School of Engineering & Management | Air Force Institute of Technology
An Electronics Technician in the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) Graduate School of Engineering and Management, Angela Hayden is the Staff Excellence Award winner this year. Angela restored full functionality to a $2M RF chamber, repairing $10K in hardware and optimizing research accuracy for radar detection students. She resolved 287 computer issues, upgraded 75 systems, saved $27K in replacement costs, and ensured a flawless annual inspection. Angela also applied continuous process improvement (CPI) to enhance the $8K Polycom system and developed quick-connect thesis tools—innovations that streamlined mission support, advanced academic presentations, and reinforced her role as a driving force behind 110 students and 30 faculty members’ academic success.

Lt. Col. Sean C. McConville
Faculty Excellence Award
Assistant Professor of Logistics & Supply Chain Management, Department of Operational Sciences | Air Force Institute of Technology
As Assistant Professor of Logistics and Supply Chain Management in the Department of Operational Sciences, Lt. Col. Sean C. McConville is the Air Force Institute of Technology Faculty Excellence Award winner. Lt. Col. McConville revamped the Advanced Study of Air Mobility’s (AMC’s premiere in-residence IDE program) capstone, aligning it with NDS priorities via an INDOPACOM wargame that integrates commercial logistics and military application, preparing future AMC leaders for GPC. He secured $15K to build a high-end C-17 apportionment software tool for USTRANSCOM and leveraged connections to obtain 16 Weapons Squadron SMEs for an ENS AI project focused on beyond-visual-range combat and integrated air defense rollback.

Lt. Col. Chandra M. Pasillas
Campus Impact Award
Assistant Professor of Atmospheric Science, Department of Engineering Physics | Air Force Institute of Technology
Lt. Col. Chandra M. Pasillas, an Assistant Professor of Atmospheric Science, is AFIT’s 2025 Campus Impact Award winner after she transformed campus teaching and learning through several initiatives. Lt. Col. Pasillas trained 40 faculty in active learning, resulting in more engaging learning experiences. She directed a $20K pedagogical grant program that boosted innovative teaching practices. Her launch of a new graduate certificate with a master’s pathway resulted in a 250% enrollment boost. Additionally, she pioneered a flexible non-degree enrollment option for direct accession students, broadening critical educational access for new Air Force Weather Officers.

Zavinie Brooks
Staff Excellence Award
Grounds Supervisor/Facilities Coordinator | Antioch College
This year’s Staff Excellence Award winner for Antioch College, Grounds Supervisor and Facilities Coordinator Zavinie Brooks supports the students and campus with his dedication and care. He is always there, willing to help with a smile on his face. Students love to be assigned to work with him for their Antioch College Works positions because he is willing to teach them and makes the work fun. His daily contributions are quiet and behind the scenes, but his presence and hard work are truly appreciated. One student said, “Vonnie has consistently been a wonderful and amazing staff member throughout my time here. I would not have been as outgoing if it wasn’t for him.”

Anna Chiaretta Lavatelli

Assistant Professor of Media Arts, Academic Affairs – Arts Division | Antioch College
Antioch College’s Faculty Excellence Award winner, Assistant Professor of Media Arts Anna Chiaretta Lavatelli is an enthusiastic and caring teacher. She is always willing to go out of her way to help students. Anna’s dedication to her students is known across campus for how she encourages them to do their very best and is willing to reword and rework things to make sure that they truly learn and understand.
One student said, “Anna’s enthusiasm for teaching… is evident in all that she does. She jumps in and helps students and the community wherever needed and goes beyond her traditional duties.” From another student, “Anna [has] been really helpful in multiple classes helping myself and other students get work done, pushing us to do our best work when we feel like we can’t, and helping modify the assignment or how we approach it so we can surprise ourselves with our work.”

Queen Meccasia Zabriskie
Campus Impact Award
Associate Professor of Sociology & Performance Studies and Director of the Coretta Scott King Center for Cultural & Intellectual Freedom | Antioch College
Queen Meccasia Zabriskie, Associate Professor of Sociology and Performance Studies and Director of the Coretta Scott King Center for Cultural and Intellectual Freedom, is Antioch College’s 2025 Campus Impact Award winner. Campus impact happens in a wide range of ways. This year, Queen’s Racial Justice Summit has had the biggest impact. It has continued her work in promoting racial equality, but it also sets the stage for continued campus growth and campus/community impact.
CEDARVILLE UNIVERSITY

Shannon Berkheiser
Staff Excellence Award
Title IX Coordinator | Cedarville University
Shannon Berkheiser, Title IX Coordinator at Cedarville University, is this year’s Staff Excellence Award winner. Shannon is credited with having substantively improved sexual assault awareness, prevention, and response for Cedarville University. She is recognized by her peers at other institutions as a leader in the field. She is also recognized by local resources such as law enforcement and county victim services as a valuable resource in the broader community.

Dr. Justin W. Cole
Faculty Excellence Award
Associate Professor and Department Chair for Pharmacy Practice, School of Pharmacy | Cedarville University
Cedarville University’s Faculty Excellence Award winner this year, Department Chair for Pharmacy Practice Dr. Justin Cole is well known as one of the university’s best teachers. In the School of Pharmacy, he serves as a model for the faculty, engaging students in pediatrics and seizures using active-learning pedagogies. Further, he has created an interprofessional ethics course with PharmD and physician associate (PA) students, where they learn together and grow in their understanding of a biblical worldview. In short, Justin inspires excellence in education in every area.

Eric W. Mishne
Campus Impact Award
Assistant Professor of Communication, Director of Forensics, Robert W. Plaster School of Business | Cedarville University
This year’s Campus Impact Award winner for Cedarville University, Eric Mishne, Assistant Professor of Communication and the Director of Forensics, is a tireless champion of helping students of all majors grow in their communicative and critical thinking skills with the forensics team. He has faithfully shepherded this team for many years, and he has ensured the team understands how to communicate in ways that honor God and, in doing so, to be a testimony to other school’s competitors.
One student said: “Coach Mishne does more than lead a forensics team; he creates a mission. He leads our team into situations that stretch and grow us, allowing the whole team to shine as a light for Christ. He’s passionate about the competition and even more so about leading us in Christlikeness. I’m thankful for three years under his teaching as a professor and two years under his coaching. He has totally changed my college career for the better.”

Dr. Nanyi Qiang
Campus Impact Award
Associate Professor of Piano, Department of Professional Education & Music | Central State University
Named this year’s Campus Impact Award winner, Associate Professor of Piano Dr. Nanyi Qiang’s efforts of servicing the music community in the greater Dayton area has drawn attention to the Central State University and the fruition of many high-caliber events that take place around the year on its campus. The positive impact has put a musical spotlight upon the CSU campus and the community.

Assistant Director, Academic Planning & Assessment, Academic Affairs | Central State University
The 2025 Staff Excellence Award winner for Central State University, Assistant Director of Academic Planning and Assessment Erika Sams exemplifies outstanding service through her collaborative efforts with faculty and staff, notably contributing to a Title III initiative to enhance academic planning and assessments. Additionally, she manages student course evaluations for each academic term, upholding her commitment to delivering quality service and fostering excellence within the university community.
A colleague shared, “Since becoming Department Chair in July 2020, I have witnessed Erika’s unwavering professionalism and exceptional service to the College of Business. She effectively communicates Title III standards and exemplifies outstanding collaboration with faculty and staff, notably in her contributions to enhancing academic planning and assessments. Her willingness to assist whenever called upon further highlights her dedication. She truly deserves this recognition for her exemplary work.”

Dr. Sandi Sumerfield
Faculty Excellence Award
Associate Professor of Reading & Literacy, Department of Professional Education & Music | Central State University
Associate Professor of Reading and Literacy at Central State University, Dr. Sandi Sumerfield was selected for this year’s Faculty Excellence Award because she demonstrates excellence through reflective, responsive teaching grounded in student feedback. She adapts instruction to meet evolving needs and models this reflective cycle for preservice teachers. In early reading instruction, Dr. Sumerfield stays current with research, balancing polarized views to offer well-rounded, evidence-based practices. She guides candidates in critically examining pedagogical positions and applying them thoughtfully in the classroom. Her goal is to foster educators who are both informed and responsive to their learners.
One of her students said, “Dr. Sumerfield’s mentorship kept me at CSU, and I will always be grateful for her dedication to her students in and outside of the classroom, as well as the College of Education. When I speak to students, I mention professors like Dr. Sumerfield — someone who is willing to take the necessary steps to ensure that her students are the best and ready to become classroom teachers. This mentorship encouraged me to continue my education, and I am now pursuing a Master of Education.”

Cincinnati State Technical & Community College’s 2025 Staff Excellence Award winner, Angelica Kennedy exemplifies excellence in student success and service through her dedicated support of the President and Board of Trustees. Her outstanding leadership includes oversight of student workers, President’s Ambassadors, and Social Media Influencers. Her active engagement with SOCHE, including multiple workshop presentations, strengthens the institution’s presence in Butler County. Angelica’s commitment to mentorship, collaboration, and student development makes her an invaluable asset and a deserving recipient of this award.

Director of Admissions | Cincinnati State Technical & Community College
Cincinnati State Director of Admissions Audrey Woods has been named the institution’s 2025 Campus Impact Award winner. Her innovative leadership has significantly increased the enrollment of students from Butler and Hamilton Counties. She orchestrated custom high school visits that attracted thousands, expanded evening and weekend information sessions, and launched focused events for specialized programs. Strategic communication and scheduling changes led to an 89% increase in Open House attendance. Audrey’s dedication to student-centered initiatives and collaboration demonstrates an outstanding impact on the community, embodying the spirit of the Campus Impact Award.

Assistant Professor, School of Business & Applied Technology | Clark State College
Clark State College has awarded Assistant Professor Lynn Geist with this year’s Faculty Excellence Award. Lynn’s teaching excellence is reflected in her ability to engage students and foster their development in a meaningful way. She continually challenges her students to think critically about human resources practices, employment law, and workplace dynamics. Controller, Office of Business Affairs | Clark State College
As Controller in the Office of Business Affairs, Kathy Nelson is Clark State College’s 2025 Staff Excellence Award winner. Through her cross-divisional efforts and engagement, Kathy champions the financial success and stability of Clark State College year-over-year. Kathy has a passion not only for numbers, but she also cares about the students and employees and goes out of her way to help others navigate the financial aspect of their duties and responsibilities, to promote positive outcomes for various programs across campus.

Director of Technology Services, Information Technology | Clark State College
Clark State has named Director of Technology Services Nathan Walters as the school’s Campus Impact Award winner for 2025. In his role, Nathan partners with nearly every department to deliver innovative, cost-effective solutions across the entire institution. Balancing strategic vision with collaboration, he leads multiple technology initiatives that enhance campus operations. His outstanding communication skills and leadership have earned him a reputation for excellence. Nathan’s impact is seen in numerous successful projects, institution-wide cost savings, and a departmental 98% satisfaction rating from students, faculty, and staff, reflecting his dedication to service and continuous improvement.

Dr. Kevin Coghlan

Assistant Professor of Psychology & Sociology, Department of Arts & Sciences | Edison State Community College
Named Edison State Community College’s Faculty Excellence Award winner, Assistant Professor of Psychology and Sociology Dr. Kevin Coghlan is an articulate faculty member who spends much time with his students. He inspires his students to work hard and excel in their coursework. Dr. Coghlan is a hard worker who always volunteers for several committees inside and outside of ESCC. He is also very helpful to other faculty members who may need help with professional development and often points his colleagues in the right direction to seek advice. Dr. Coghlan’s students talk about his knowledge and passion for the subject matter he covers. He is also personable, has excellent interpersonal skills, and always listens to his students. He engages the students in multiple ways and keeps them wanting more.

She also has been a strong contributor to the SOCHE Financial Aid Committee and even presented to members a Financial Aid Basics webinar.

Edison State Community College’s Staff Excellence Award winner, Dean of Accreditation and Academic Effectiveness Kimberli Zornes demonstrates excellence in assessment and service to the college. She is always available to help faculty with the steps needed to start a new program. She is encouraging and patient. Kimberli has been instrumental in assisting the ESCC provost in the development of a new practical nursing certificate.

A passionate educator in the Education and Society Department, Amie is recognized for her immersive student-centered teaching, impactful curriculum redesign, and mentorship that extends beyond the classroom. From founding the Education Club to developing community-based learning opportunities, Amie’s commitment to fostering connection, growth, and access exemplifies teaching excellence at Miami Regionals.

Dr. Nehad Omara

Adjunct Assistant Professor of Chemistry | Miami University Regionals
Dr. Nehad Omara, the Campus Impact Award winner at Miami University Regionals, also was named the 2025 recipient of the Miami Regionals Excellence in Teaching Award for Part-Time Faculty. A dedicated chemistry educator, Dr. Omara is known for her ability to make complex concepts accessible, her inclusive and student-centered teaching style, and her unwavering commitment to student success. She brings enthusiasm, innovation, and a collaborative spirit to every course she teaches, making a lasting impact on both her students and the department.

Julia Pond

Director, Regional Office of Student Activities & Orientation | Miami University Regionals
The 2025 Staff Excellence Award winner at Miami University Regionals, Julia Pond is Director of the Regional Office of Student Activities and Orientation. Since Julia moved into her role, there has been a positive shift in the vibe of campus. She has helped revive Regionals’ Student Government, allowed staff and faculty to engage with students, and has pushed for new and fun things across campus. If something needs to be done, Julia is there to do it, no questions asked, and she is the first to volunteer to help on a project. Julia is a staple on campus, and people look to her in times of discomfort. With her positivity and optimism, she does a great job of calming others and making them feel seen and heard.

Dr. Kimberly Inman

Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic & Student Affairs | Shawnee State University
Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs at Shawnee State University, Dr. Kimberly Inman has been named the institution’s Campus Impact Award winner for 2025. In recent years, Dr. Inman has held leadership roles in the Department of Natural Sciences, as the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and currently in the Provost’s position. In the Provost role over the last year, she has worked very hard to improve the culture of Academic and Student Affairs. She has been collaborative and innovative in efforts across her leadership positions, and she has worked hard to be visible, available, and inclusive in her projects.

Dr. Rhoni Maxwell-Rader, Professor of Psychology at Shawnee State University, has been chosen as the school’s Faculty Excellence Award winner this year. Dr. Maxwell-Rader has consistently demonstrated extraordinary dedication to fostering student growth through her expertise, compassion, and unwavering support. She goes beyond traditional teaching by seamlessly integrating mentorship into every interaction. In her Psychology of the Adult course, she supplements lectures with tailored resources (e.g., curated research articles, case studies, and practical tools) that bridge theory and real-world application. Dr. Maxwell-Rader fosters a culture of collaboration and belonging. Whether through open office hours, responsive email communication, or help on graduate school applications, she ensures students feel supported.
According to one student, “What truly distinguishes Dr. Maxwell-Rader is her investment in students’ holistic growth. She dedicates time to weekly ‘talk-time Thursdays’ where we discuss our internships, as well as one-on-one meetings, offering nuanced feedback on academic work and career planning. Notably, she leverages her professional network to connect students with research opportunities, conferences, and internships, ensuring we’re prepared for post-graduation success. She’s been an invaluable resource to have in my corner as I navigate my final semester.”

Procurement Specialist, Purchasing Office | Shawnee State University
Procurement Specialist Debra Schwamberger is Shawnee State University’s Staff Excellence Award winner for 2025. She is truly a wealth of knowledge, and her approachable and patient nature makes her an absolute blessing to work with. Debra is always willing to walk her colleagues at the university through any questions they have, no matter how simple or complex, all while making them feel welcome and confident. Her pleasant disposition makes even the most challenging situations feel manageable. She’s been an exceptional mentor to colleagues in the purchasing office.

Dr. Dawn Allen

Assistant Dean; Professor; Director of Agriculture Department | Sinclair Community College
As Sinclair College’s 2025 Faculty Excellence Award winner, Assistant Dean and Director of the Agriculture Department Dr. Dawn Allen demonstrates excellence in teaching and scholarship through her student-centered approach, real-world curriculum design, and community-focused initiatives. She integrates service learning by partnering with the Dayton Food Bank and stays current in her field through active participation in professional organizations like Institute of Food Technologists and Ohio Green Industry Association. Her involvement in NSF’s Hi-Tech development and the American Horticulture Association Convention enhances her scholarship and supports her success in securing grants to grow her innovative Agriculture program. Dr. Allen’s teaching methods foster student engagement and growth by connecting classroom theory with meaningful, real-life applications. She challenges her students to think critically about global food systems while also empowering them with local, actionable skills. She inspires her students to pursue careers with purpose and impact. She believes that every student deserves personalized support and a clear path to success, while consistently putting the needs of her students first.

Sherita Jackson

Senior Academic Advisor, Academic Advising Center | Sinclair Community College
Sherita Jackson, Senior Academic Advisor in the Academic Advising Center at Sinclair Community College, has been chosen as the school’s Staff Excellence Award winner this year. Sherita is an emerging leader who daily demonstrates her commitment to Sinclair’s mission to “find the need and endeavor to meet it.” Above and beyond her work with students, Sherita supports colleagues, as well – always with student success as the goal. Caring and dedicated, she mentors new advisors and is a liaison with academic departments. Sherita is the first to volunteer, whether to cover “Quick Question” shifts, pilot new programs like the Faculty Shadowing Experience, or plan an event, such as the first Open House for the Academic Advising Center. She is a shining example of the role academic advising plays in student support, student retention, student success, and program completion.

This year’s Faculty Excellence Award winner for the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Robert Buckingham, Professor of Mathematics, joined the university in 2009. His research bridges pure and applied mathematics, focusing on how patterns emerge from disordered systems. He often connects fields like probability and differential equations. Dr. Buckingham’s work is supported by the NSF and Simons Foundation. He has co-organized five conferences at UC, is an editor for the Journal of Nonlinear Science, and has given invited talks in ten countries. Since 2020, Dr. Buckingham has served as Graduate Program Director, mentoring students and enhancing graduate education through research, teaching, and professional development.

Briana Clark

Associate Athletic Director, Department of Athletics | Wilmington College
Associate Athletic Director Briana Clark is Wilmington College’s 2025 Campus Impact Award winner. Briana has made a significant impact on the Wilmington campus and is a person that makes the athletic department “go.” In her role, she touches all student-athletes and coaches by helping manage compliance, eligibility, budgets, transportation, scheduling, game-day operations, and day-to-day operations. Briana is truly the first point of contact for any athletic-related question or concern. She also served as interim Athletic Director for a few months while a search was done to hire a full-time AD. She then directed the on-boarding process for the new AD in every possible way. She also continues to serve on more than 10 committees outside of athletics, which connects her to almost everyone else on campus.

The 2025 Wilmington College Faculty Excellence Award winner, Professor of English Dr. Ursula McTaggart earns the honor not only for her dedication to students on campus but also for the remarkable work she did over the past two years to plan, lead, and launch the Wilmington College Prison Education Program (PEP) at three correctional facilities in Ohio. As Dr. McTaggart will tell you, the first day she stepped into a correctional facility to meet with incarcerated students, the experience transformed her and her teaching. She navigated what may be the most complex approval and accrediting processes. Throughout the process and the subsequent launch of the program in summer 2024, Dr. McTaggart demonstrated nerve and persistence, while also acting with grace and offering encouragement during the most stressful times.

Systems Technician Zachary Sizemore has been named Wilmington College’s 2025 Staff Excellence Award winner. Zach models Wilmington College’s core values in every aspect of his work. From his pleasant and eager attitude to his keen problem-solving abilities and work ethic, Zach works daily to make Wilmington College a better place. This is especially evident in the work he has done to establish and grow the eSports club on campus. Since its inception two years ago, Zach’s initiative and commitment have grown the eSports club membership to over sixty students. His plans for the club are to join an eSports affiliation this fall and to begin competing against other schools in the area, thereby increasing Wilmington College’s presence in the larger eSports arena.

Several nominators shared that he carries a warmth and light that one can sense when meeting him and that he has an immense passion for teaching. His wildly creative courses also attract students who are ready to think, to learn, and to be challenged.

From ensuring the safety and security of all those who call Wittenberg home, to helping train officers and managing daily shift operations, to designing curriculum for future training and speaking to classes, Lee has ensured that the University community is informed and equipped to manage safety-related issues and concerns. Additionally, his leadership and expertise in managing the situation when Wittenberg’s hometown of Springfield, Ohio, became the subject of national and international political discourse in fall 2024 proved both essential and outstanding during what was a challenging time.

He is a prolific researcher with thirteen referenced articles, a recent book on the rise of medical marijuana, and multiple book chapters and reports. His teaching ranges from first-year seminars to graduate courses. Additionally, Dr. Hannah is one of the most visible public intellectuals in southern Ohio and beyond, sought after for his insightful and objective commentary on U.S. politics.

Wright State University’s 2025 Staff Excellence Award winner is Catherine Hernandez Hogan, Senior Director of Latino Affairs and Community Engagement in the Division of Inclusive Excellence. In this role, Catherine works closely with Enrollment Services to strategically create a college-going culture among students from underserved communities. Catherine has exemplified stellar leadership in this role, providing opportunities for hundreds of students to visit campus and understand that college is a viable option for their future. In the last two years, she has raised nearly $75,000 in sponsorships and scholarships for students. A true campus leader, she always seems to set the pace for others to follow.
