2019 President Emeritus Award

President Emeritus status is reserved to honor past SOCHE presidents who have provided outstanding and distinguished service to SOCHE members and the Southwestern Ohio region. The current SOCHE president may call upon the President Emeritus to provide counsel.

Sean Creighton

President Emeritus

Dr. Sean Creighton served as the President of the Southwestern Ohio Council for Higher Education from 2003 to 2019 and now holds the title of President Emeritus. Under his 15-year leadership, SOCHE experienced significant growth, adding new education and civic programs, leading community-based initiatives, starting a for-profit subsidiary to support research and development, and completing a merger with another nonprofit to advance workforce solutions for the region. SOCHE received numerous accolades and awards for its collaborative work in Ohio, including the Dayton Business Journal’s Nonprofit of the Year and Innovation Index Award.

A dedicated public servant, Creighton has served on numerous boards, including the Dayton Literary Peace Prize, International Leadership Association, Springfield Museum of Art and TEDxDayton. He, also, completed ten years as an elected school board member in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Creighton has published and presented extensively on higher education, collaboration, civic engagement, and talent retention, and has been a principal investigator for the Kettering Foundation on research projects concerning the civic mission of higher education. He is currently the President of the New American Colleges & Universities and resides in Dayton, Ohio, with his wife, Leslee, and his five children, Liam, Maya, Quinn, Audrey, and Juliette.
