About the Mental Health Training

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Research shows nearly 1 in 5 university students is affected by anxiety or depression.
  • In Spring 2017, nearly 40% of college students said they had felt so depressed in the prior year that it was difficult for them to function.
  • 64.1% of youth with major depression do not receive any mental health treatment.
  • Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among college-age students.

Research shows a young person’s brain is not fully developed until the age of 25. Young people on college campuses face a myriad of stressors that require them to “function as adults” without a fully developed “brain”. These stressors, combined with the lack of a fully functional frontal lobe, can lead to a variety of mental health issues.

Offered in 24 countries and all 50 states, Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. The course covers:

  • Common mental health challenges for youth
  • Reviews typical adolescent development and discusses when mental health issues may arise
  • Discusses risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems in youth
  • Teaches a 5-step action plan, ALGEE, for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations

Councils & Committees

SOCHE is dedicated to advancing higher education through active collaboration, resource and knowledge building, and effective professional development programs. To accomplish this, SOCHE administers 16 active Councils and Committees. The purpose of a SOCHE Council or Committee is to provide an opportunity for representatives from higher education to be a resource for one another, share information and best practices, identify common challenges, and, ultimately, broaden awareness of the resources, services, and activities in higher education. SOCHE is also dependent upon the Councils and Committees for substantial input on annual professional development programs.
