AFIT

2012 Internships

Summer 2012 program is now closed to new applications.

SOCHE's Summer Internship Program provides opportunities for engineering and science students (STEM). Students will work at The Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), which is located on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio.

The SOCHE Summer Internship Program is a summer only program that hosts students from institutions throughout the United States. The Graduate School of Engineering & Management at the AFIT, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base has a long history of graduate research and education. The Summer Internship program allows students to develop scientific and engineering independence and self-confidence through participation in actual research projects in a graduate educational environment.

Must be a U.S. Citizen

Application Deadline was February 10, 2012.

We are seeking Science and Engineering Students in the following areas:

  • Science
  • Computer Science · Materials Science · Mathematics
  • Operations Research · Physics
  • Engineering
  • Aeronautical · Astronautical · Electrical & Computer
  • Mechanical · Nuclear · Systems

Also, students who have recently completed an undergraduate degree in one of these disciplines are encouraged to apply, provided the pursuit of appropriate graduate studies in Fall 2012 is planned.

The student intern selection criteria includes: transcript indicating academic field and level of achievement; resume; 3 professional references; and a match between student interests and available projects.

Benefits:

  1. The Program benefits undergraduate students by immersing them in graduate level research with faculty and graduate students.
  2. Many interns are AFROTC cadets who receive the benefit of witnessing AFIT's graduate level programs.
  3. Interns are encouraged to pursue MS or PhD Programs at AFIT at a future time in their careers – the experience gives a head start at AFIT
  4. Learn about the Air Force, Department of Defense Laboratories, and graduate education programs.
  5. Non AFROTC students witness government graduate education, which may influence future employment decisions with the government.

Selection Process:

This unique educational experience is open to students majoring in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, aeronautical engineering, mechanical engineering, mathematics, engineering physics, operational sciences, or a relevant area of study.

There are a limited number of intern positions available; therefore, applications should be completed in a timely manner.  Please submit your application by 10 February 2012 (Application, Transcript, Résumé, and References), SOCHE staff and AFIT faculty will review the prospective interns' submitted records.

Selections of interns will be finalized between March - May 2012.

Selected interns will be notified by email.

SOCHE will sponsor internships any time in the window 1 May to 30 September 2012. Interns should consult the program coordinator upon arrival and agree on exact stop dates. The schedule is flexible within the following guidelines:

  1. Students and faculty mentors should agree on the schedule; The internships may start no earlier than 1 May 2012; and
  2. The internships may end no later than 30 September 2012.

Although the Federal Government does not require a standard application, we do need certain information to evaluate your qualifications. If your résumé or application does not provide all the information requested in the job vacancy announcement, you may lose consideration for an internship. There are four items that we need and two of them have to be attached to the application form before you will be allowed to submit (only .txt, .doc, .pdf files will be accepted):

  1. A completed application form.
  2. A copy of your transcript from your current college or university. (Unofficial copies are accepted)
  3. A current résumé.
  4. Three professional references.

Because this application process is completely electronic, you will be able to attach your documents (transcript and résumé) upon completion of the application form. (Please scan in hard copy transcripts to create an electronic copy so you will have them ready for attachment to the application form).

Housing:

Arranging for housing is the responsibility of the intern. Apartment guides and phone numbers for local housing may be obtained through the WPAFB Housing Office (937-257-6547).
