AFIT Works with SOCHE

December 23, 2010 - Dayton, Ohio

AFIT Works with SOCHE On Summer Internship Program

The Southwestern Ohio Council for Higher Education (SOCHE) has been asked to manage the Air Force Institute of Technology's (AFIT) summer internship program as part of SOCHE's overall contract with AFIT. This program is a new addition to SOCHE's portfolio of student internships and will focus on providing additional research opportunities for undergraduate students who have returned to the greater Dayton region for their summer break, in addition to students who live locally.

Dr. Heidi Ries, Dean for Research and Sponsored Programs at AFIT is excited about the collaboration.  "We are confident this expansion will not only benefit AFIT's research, but also offer excellent hands-on learning opportunities for college students in the area and as well as nationally."

Dr. Sean Creighton, Executive Director of SOCHE, is equally excited about this opportunity, and commented that, "Collaboration is an abundant, renewable resource, and the summer internship program illustrates a successful model of collaboration that builds relationships between area colleges students and the Air Force."

This unique educational experience is specifically targeting undergraduate students majoring in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, aeronautical engineering, mechanical engineering, mathematics, engineering physics, operational sciences, or a relevant area of study. The summer internship program provides numerous benefits to participants, including the opportunity to be immersed in graduate level research with AFIT faculty and graduate students.

The application deadline for the summer internship program is January 31, 2011. For detailed information, visit: http://www.soche.org/students/student-internships

Since 1986, SOCHE's Student Research Program has managed research internships for thousands of undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students from the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines at both AFIT and the Air Force Research Laboratory/RX. SOCHE's student internship program is a highly regarded model for helping the Air Force carry out mission critical work by connecting Wright-Patterson Air Force base to the region's young talent.

Formed in 1967, SOCHE is a consortium of over 20 public and private colleges and universities dedicated to advancing higher education in the region through active collaboration, resource and knowledge building, and effective professional development programs.
