The SOCHE Segue - February 2010

Taking Action to Make a Difference

Sean CreightonIn this issue of the SOCHE Segue, I’m proud to tell you how our members and SOCHE are taking action to improve lives and society. Here are just a few highlights:

  • Our Board of Trustees graciously extended an honorary membership to Antioch College as the liberal arts institution rebuilds its legacy.
  • Our team is preparing a workshop designed to help facilitate higher education employees’ “passing it forward” to help others create a plan for professional success.
  • The husband of our intern, Carol Judge, urged her to follow her passion. You’ll meet Carol in this issue.
  • A graduate student at Antioch University McGregor offered the proceeds from her book to benefit local historic preservation efforts.
  • A group of Cedarville students spent their holiday break rebuilding homes in New Orleans.

Whether it’s offering your talents and ideas or just extending a helping hand – taking action is the most important step. I encourage you to make a difference every day.

Sincerely,
Sean Creighton

Board of Trustees Passed Resolution

Antioch CollegeAt its January meeting, SOCHE’s Board of Trustees passed a resolution to grant honorary membership to Antioch College. The honorary membership will afford Antioch College with the rights and privileges of traditional membership, and will be valid for the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 academic years.

Antioch College, which was a founding member of SOCHE, is expected to reopen to students in Fall 2011.

“The fellowship we now share with your member colleges and universities, through honorary membership in SOCHE, has both symbolic and practical implications to the restoration of Antioch College. We are deeply proud of this new distinction for the College,” said Matthew Derr, interim president.

MVRP Internship Program

SOCHE recently entered into an agreement to develop an internship program for employers located at Miami Valley Research Park. The program will be designed to:

  1. Strengthen the relationship between employers and area universities
  2. Gather a deep understanding of the talent needs of MVRP employers
  3. Design an optimal program to meet the needs of employers and students
While still early in the planning stages, this initiative will be fully launched in fall 2010.

Since its first contract in 1986 with the Air Force Research Laboratory, SOCHE has administered over ten research and development contracts in excess of 25 million dollars through its Student Research Program. This experience has given SOCHE a knowledge base and strong network of working relationships with students in the region.

Civic Engagement Conference: Higher Education's Leadership in Community and Economic Transition

SOCHE is partnering with Ohio Campus Compact and The Ohio State University to deliver a daylong conference focusing on higher education’s role in community and economic engagement. This topic is increasingly timely, as Ohio continues to move from a manufacturing-based economy to a creative- and service-based economy.

Wim WiewelDr. Wim Wiewel, president of Portland State University (PSU), will deliver the keynote and his insight into community engagement – current and future. Wiewel has authored numerous books and articles, including Global Universities and Urban Development, The University as Urban Developer, and Suburban Sprawl.

Taking a realistic look at both victories and challenges, Wiewel will unpack the messiness of higher education’s pursuit of getting engagement right. In his presentation, he will draw on previous examples as well as his current work at PSU where he has brought a renewed focus on expanding civic partnerships.

Other Conference Highlights:

  • Concurrent sessions that address three different tracks: Community-based Faculty Work, Community-based Student Work, and College/University Economic Engagement. These are opportunities for students, faculty and staff to present projects and research that are explicitly community-based.
  • A panel discussion on higher education’s role in economic development policy moderated by Karin Fischer, senior reporter for The Chronicle of Higher Education. Panel members include Joyce Beatty, senior vice president of Outreach and Engagement at The Ohio State University, Eric Fingerhut, chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents, Wiewel, and other prestigious leaders.

Join us on Tuesday, April 6. For more information click here.

Intern Spotlight: Carol Judge

Carol Judge is SOCHE’s newest intern. She’s a first-year graduate student at Wright State University (WSU) studying student affairs in higher education.

Carol enrolled at WSU after a 26-year absence from college. While putting her three children through college, Carol found her passion for higher education. During information sessions she attended with her kids, she sometimes wondered if she was more excited than they were. Her husband, who has been a staff member at WSU for 23 years, agreed that the timing was right for Carol to pursue her graduate degree.

As an intern, Carol is providing conference support, assisting the various committees and helping to research SOCHE’s history. She will be interning with SOCHE through the Spring.

When not at SOCHE, Carol is an active community volunteer and a freelance writer.

Cedarville Students Trade Textbooks for Nail Guns

Cedarville UniversityAs most college students were packing up and heading down the road to the familiar comforts of home, a group of Cedarville students ventured to New Orleans to kick off their Christmas break by volunteering with Samaritan’s Purse.

Resident Director Anthony Mandela was well aware of the need of those in New Orleans who were affected by Hurricane Katrina. As a Cedarville student in 2006, Mandela traveled to New Orleans to help rebuild. Now, as an alumnus holding leadership over a group of resident assistants, he saw benefit in extending a similar opportunity to his men.

“I wanted to give them the same experience that was so powerful to me,” he explained. “I wanted to broaden their experiences, expose them to new things, and encourage them to use their time and talents to serve the Body of Christ and give to those in need.”

In all, 11 men left Cedarville on December 13 for a week-long trip. The volunteers worked alongside Samaritan’s Purse, homeowners, and other volunteers from across the country painting, framing houses, securing siding, and simply encouraging people.

“I think the most awesome thing about this trip was the fact that no one ever said ‘no’ or ‘I can't’. The locals just need somebody who is willing to put in some time and hard work to help them out,” shared sophomore Collin Mitchell who is planning to return in the near future. “It was an extremely satisfying experience to look at a house and know that your two hands helped build it. There's just something about that feeling that makes it all worth it.”

Sinclair Community CollegeThe Institute of Higher Education at the University of Florida has recognized Sinclair Community College as a 2010 Bellwether Award Finalist for its work on decreasing the Dayton Public Schools dropout rate through the Fast Forward Center.
