Civic Engagement Conference
Higher Education’s Leadership in Community and Economic Transition

Tuesday, April 6, 2010
9:00 am to 3:00 pm
The Ohio State University
The Nationwide & Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center
Columbus, Ohio
Featured Speaker: Dr. Wim Wiewel, President, Portland State University
SOCHE, Ohio Campus Compact, and The Ohio State University have programmed an opportunity to examine higher education’s role as a leader in community and economic engagement, which particularly fitting in these current times of transition as we move from a manufacturing based economy to more of a creative and service economy.
Featured speaker, Dr. Wim Wiewel, President, Portland State University, will share insight into the “leadership” of community engagement (current and future). An author of numerous books and articles, including most recently Global Universities and Urban Development, The University as Urban Developer, and Suburban Sprawl, Dr. Wiewel will draw on previous examples as well as his current work at Portland State where he has brought a renewed focus on expanding civic partnerships. Taking a realistic look at both victories and challenges, Dr. Wiewel will unpack the messiness of higher education’s pursuit of getting engagement right.
In addition, there will be concurrent sessions that address three different tracks: Community-Based Faculty Work, Community-Based Student Work, and College/University Economic Engagement. This is an opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to present projects and research that are explicitly community-based.
A further highlight of the conference will be a panel discussion on higher education’s role in influencing economic development policy. Moderated by Karin Fischer, senior reporter, The Chronicle of Higher Education, the panel will include high-ranking leaders as well as our guest presenters, including:
- Joyce Beatty, Senior Vice President, Outreach and Engagement, The Ohio State University
- Eric Fingerhut, Chancellor, Ohio Board of Regents
- Wim Wiewel, President, Portland State University
