The finale in a three-part series examining the role of the library in the student's journey, SOCHE's Library Council is hosting a conference open to all interested professionals.

The featured speaker for this event is Dr. Ann Marshall, Reference Librarian, Rush Rhees Library, University of Rochester. Dr. Marshall was involved in the project: Studying Students: The Undergraduate Research Project at the University of Rochester. The study provided a view into the groundbreaking application of ethnographic tools and techniques to the understanding of undergraduate students and their use of information. The publication shared insight into how academic librarians might use these techniques on their own campuses. Her research will inform her keynote presentation: Who are they really? Studying Students at the University of Rochester Libraries

In addition to Dr. Marshall, the event will include a presentation from local anthropology/sociology faculty from the University of Dayton-

  • Sawyer Hunley is the coordinator of the School Psychology Program and a learning teaching fellow at the University of Dayton. She has been leading the Living Learning Project, which is investigating the impact of built space and academic programming on teaching and learning. Her professional and research interests include systems change and academic development for K-12 and higher education. Her publications have focused on the nature of the changing field of school psychology, the use of assessment to guide data-based decision making, and the relationship between learning space and teaching and learning.
  • Molly Schaller is an associate professor and coordinator of the College Student Personnel and Higher Education Administration Programs and a fellow in the Learning Teaching Center at the University of Dayton. Prior to her faculty position, she worked for 10 years in student affairs administration. Her research, in partnership with Sawyer Hunley, has been to understand the relationship between learning space, learning engagement, and pedagogy. Schaller also conducts research on college student development, specifically on sophomore students and the sophomore-year experience.

Their presentation will focus on methods for studying the relationship between built space and student participation, engagement and learning. Presenters will discuss both quantitative and qualitative methods they have used to understand this relationship. Photographic studies, observation, survey methods, quasi-experimental design, focus groups and individual interviews will be highlighted.

The conference will generate an important and valuable discussion on the integration of the library in student life.

Registration Fee: the conference fee is $75 for SOCHE members and $100 for non-members.
